I Took a Break ~ Feb 28

Well All, many of you probably noticed I took a break this week both from photography and blogging. I did a little shooting this week but I think I was a little low on creative juices so I decided that I would just take a break.

I have full intentions of heading out this week to shoot. I missed being out with my camera very much and want to get back into it so I don't loose the rhythm of it all.

I did however, watch some of the Kelbytraining videos that are online. I have been working on the Joe McNally section ... Working with one light ... Which was very informative and I am looking forward to trying some of the techniques he showed.

I also went out and put a down payment on a new lens. I have decided to get a wide angle lens, so I guess I have to keep working for a little while longer.

And this evening I booked my hotel room for Canmore for the SNAP seminars. I am looking forward to getting away. I am looking forward to getting there a little early to do some shooting and relaxing ... I think it will be a good weekend away.

I look forward to getting back to blogging this coming week and sharing my photos and creations with you.

Poem/Photo Combo - In Flanders Fields

A new section for my blog that will be posted on Tuesdays. My course has ended now and wanted to have something to add for Tuesdays.

I have often thought that some of my photos would go with some of the poetry that is out there and have decided that I am going to do this. I am no writer, often wish in someway I was but I have decided that if my photos fit then I am going to share them.

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place: and in the sky
The larks still bravely singing fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the dead: Short days ago,
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved: and now we lie
In Flanders fields!

Take up our quarrel with the foe
To you, from failing hands, we throw
The torch: be yours to hold it high
If ye break faith with us who die,
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields

By Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae
Composed at the battlefront on May 3, 1915 during the second battle of Ypres, Belgium

Photoshop Mondays ~ Feb 22

I think I am going to share with you all a little something I picked up from Photoshopusertv.com that Matt showed. It is the high pass filter, which I really never know how to use and now I have a basic idea. I would suggest that you, head to Episode 222 and view this tutorial, Matt explains it way better than I.

The high pass:
Filter > Other > High Pass = I up the radius until you start getting edges, this setting is really up to you.
Hit Ok
You will notice your image is now grey, now you will change your blend modes to soft light.

Now you will see that your image is crisper/clearer looking.

The high pass filter helps to sharpen your image. Please remember it will not work for every image, but learn to play never know what you might come up with.

Not sure if you can see the difference or not, but check out Matt's Tutorial and you will be able to see it there.

P365 - Everyday Stuff

Ok, so like I said in a early post I was kinda running out of ideas so I decided that I would try just an ordinary everyday thing.

So I decided on Laundry which to be totally honest with you, I Hate Doing!!! I personally think that once they are dirty you should be aloud just to go shopping and get new stuff. Or well, a maid would be really nice as well!! Hahah

Not sure what tomorrow might during but it might be another everyday thing. hahah

Sunday Wrap Up ~ Feb 21

What a busy 2 weeks, I wasn't able to post anything last Sunday like I wanted to. I find when I work the Sundays at my so called day job and I have the time like I want to post anything that day. However, today I did not have to work so I shall do my best to remember what I have done the last 2 weeks.

This week was my last class in "How to Make Money with your Camera". I really enjoyed this class and hope to be able to use some of the different things in my own photography. The last class, the final 2 projects were due; Portraits and 12 photos that you would use on your website (6new/old).

If you wish to check out the final 2 assignments at the following site: http://www.flickr.com/photos/kellym32ca/sets/72157623455498986/

I have for my week at Niagara School of Imaging in the last week as well. I am so ready to get away for a while but that is in August so I am trying not to get to excited yet!! Hahah

However, I also pay for half my weekend out at Canmore at the SNAP - Photography Seminar which I am looking forward to as well. Just need to find a place to same and a bus ticket, hahah I guess I better do that soon.

I had a really give shoot with a friend at work and her daughter. They did a great job of posing and modeling for me. Thank you both very much ... I look forward to photographing both of you again sometime when it warms up.

I am still working on my P365 Project and have been a little slow lately coming up with some ideas. However, next month I am going to break the weeks up in to themes. So what I am thinking I am going to break the weeks up so that each week will have a theme or study of a subject whether it is traffic or buildings or common everyday stuff, I haven't completely decided. Just to try and keep things fresh and I do not get to bored with it.

I have been slowing rearranging/re-organizing my blog site, with hopes that it would make things a little more user friendly. Please Let me know what you think: http://ksphotographyca.blogspot.com/

This will be the 3nd week with Art Works and its been an interesting adventure. I have just been finding paintings so far that I like, something to open my mind up to see differently. I have really enjoyed looking at the different painting by the Group of Seven which I will continue with them for a little while longer and they I will move on to other styles of paintings or drawings or something I just haven't decided yet.

I am also introducing a new section this week called Poems. I will be posting this on Tuesdays evenings and you will have to wait and see what this is all about.

Well, that is it for this Wrap Up. This coming week I am hoping will be a little more interesting, ha ha

Please come and check me out on Facebook:

Black & White Fridays - Feb 19

This is actually a Black and White the I created in December, just before Christmas. I had gone downtown to see what I could find for Christmas themes and well didn't find really anything that impressed me. I decided to do a little Motion art or something to that effect :o)

Last Class & P365

Last Class

The Last class of "How to Make Money with Your Camera" was last night. The poor instructor was so sick he wasn't able to make it in however, his wife was very nice to cover for him.

We spent the evening going through the different images that everyone bought in. It was great, there are some very talented people in this class and I truly enjoyed seeing there work.

Bill Marsh was a great instructor and I am so glad that I was able to take his course before he left SAIT.

Thank you for sharing you knowledge.

Tuesday`s 365 was taken on the way to class. The sun was just setting and made downtown Calgary glow. I wish I would have had a higher vantage point but sometimes that is just the way it is. I quick popped off the train and took a few shots before I missed the sun completely. I was also glad enough to get a couple of shots of the Calgary Tower with its flame on. I am thinking that I might head downtown on the weekend and see if I can get some other interesting views of the tower again.

P365 - Interesting People and Playing

Well, I am posting both Sunday and Mondays P365 this evening. Mostly because I didn't have anytime to post until now.

I have been busy trying to finish up Friday photo shoot, which I do believe all the photos are done now. Which you can check out at the following link:

Sonja & Alyssa; They were great models and I look forward to working with them in the future.

Sunday's P365 are of 2 people I work with, and they were busy handing out flowers yesterday for Valentine's Day.

I do wish I had a little better light but I think that the photos turned out not to bad. Thank you both for posing for me, I really do appreciate it.

Today, I played a little in my mini-studio, which by the way really needs to be cleaned again. I picked up a parasols last week and I knew it would make a great photo just by itself. I did play a little in Photoshop just to see what I might beable to create.

Photoshop Mondays - Feb 15

Here is a trick I picked up in my last photoshop class in September with Marlene Hielema. She was a great instructor, very knowledgeable.

One of the great tricks that she showed the class was to fix your colors, shadows and highlights by using curves.

It is a Scott Kelby method of color correcting your photos. It takes a little to do but once you follow the steps you will be quite surprised with the end results.

My Dad, The Boxer

Ok, no isnt a boxer but I never did argue with him when I was a kid, because I usually didnt win. LoL :) I went looking for some props today and came across a pair of fake boxing gloves. I thought they would be good to use.

Not the greatest lighting but I think it would work in a pinch with a little extra light.

4 days of P365

Well, learned something new this week ... Don't Hurt Your Back, Its Sucks!! But I refuse to not do my P365 project, I just wasn't able to do any editing until today. I did do some shooting each day, some of thought out and others where not hahah.

Sunday; I went out just for a little while with my camera and a macro lens on to see what I might get. It was another Frosty day here in Calgary so I thought it might be neat to try a few macro shots.

365 Photo Project - Photo 6

Monday; Was another frosty day ... However, I really thought it was a neat looking day, the clouds would thicken up and it would snow and then the clouds would thin and the sun would try coming out. This photo was taken just after the sun disappeared and it got a little foggy!!!

365 Photo Project - Photo 8

Tuesday; was my long day, started with the moon was still out, hahah The moon, Tuesday morning was beautiful and this photo does not do it justice.

365 Photo Project - Photo 9

Wednesday; Well, I had been noticing that my laptop with not feeling well and I took it in for a check up and low and behold it had a virus. I was lucky enough that it hadnt done alot of damage and what was done was reversible.

Curve Creation Thursday - Feb 11

This week I took a few early morning shoots of the frost/snow covered trees. I hope no intention of turning it in to a Curve Creation but I thought I would try it out just to see and I loved the results.

Oil Painting - http://www.arthistoryarchive.com/arthistory/canadian/images/Frank-H-Johnston-Serenity-Lake-of-the-Woods-1922.jpg

My first thought of this painting is there is a storm coming. Big thunderheads and the dark grey striking clouds are moving in. But the stormy winds haven't hit yet giving time for everyone to find shelter and safety, which is why the lake is empty at this time.

The yellows in this oil painting give it a sense of calm before the storm. The yellow almost makes the mood heavy or oppressive mood to the painting.

These are just make first impressions of the painting which was done in 1922 by Frank H. Johnson of the "Group of Seven".

Yellow, Stormy, Calm, Shoreline, Industry, Fishing, Lumber, Boats, Water, Island, Storm Clouds, Coming Storm, Calm before the Storm, Blues, Reds, Browns, Greys, Whites, Rocky, Big, Small, Canada, Ripples, Reflections, Trees, Cliffs, Buildings, Heavy, Oppressive, Dark, Lights, Moods, Life, Death, Wilderness, Rural.

Continuations of last weeks topic of Curves

I probably did not do a great work of explaining this topic and probably really wont be able until you go in and experiment for yourselves.

I still have alot to learn regarding curves but I do like what I can create or fix in curves that some of the other options in photoshop can not do. I think you have a much better chance of enchancing your photos using curves.

So one of the basic things for curves; create 3 points on the curve line: 1st point in the middle, 2nd point half way between the top and the middle and the 3rd point halfway between the bottom and then middle.

The centre point holds the line in place.
Top point drag up and it will lighten your light areas.
Bottom point drag down and it will darken your dark areas.

This should create an S-curve to your line creating some contrast in your photo.

Check out the tutorial on Coffeeshop PS Blog for more info: http://coffeeteaphotography.blogspot.com/2009/09/coffeeshop-editing-101-s-curve-pop.html

Sunday Wrap Up ~ Feb 7

Sundays: Well, last Sunday I worked so I didnt do much that day before work. However, I did finish up a project that I was working for a friend. It was a deadline kinda of thing so it is nice to know that I can work under a little pressure. Also, I got together the last for my assignment for that week class. Then, it was off to work.

Mondays: I did a little shooting that morning I had another idea for my assignment so I had to try it out. I am hoping at something later on I will try this assignment again just to see what else I can come up with for Creative Corporate Logo image.

Tuesdays: Was a Long day as well as My Mom's Birthday. It was a good day, but very busy. My work day started at 8am, so not much time do anything else other than work and school. However, before I made it to class I did a little shooting of the new parking structure walkway. It is a weird thing sticking up out of the ground but makes an awesome thing to shoot. And then after class I quick shot the front of the Heritage Building at SAIT. Got some really neat shoots!!

Wednesdays: MINI-HOLIDAY BEGINS!!! I took a few days off last week, I need a break before I went nuts. Wednesday was very much a right off but I did do a little shooting. First off, there was another bowling team that needed their photos done. I took some shoots that day of the frost on the trees again ... beautiful and I didnt have to go very far to get them. I also designed a new logo as well today, something a little different than before which you can see at the top of this blog entry.

Thursdays: I spend a couple of hours out shooting at Union cemetery here in Calgary. I had a couple of ideas in mind that I wanted to try out and I think I was very successful. I love going up to Union, there are some really interesting headstones
there make for interesting photos.

Fridays: I didnt do to much Friday, caught up on a few things. I decided that I would shoot a few photos of Mom's birthday flowers and attempt to be a little creative with them.

Saturdays: Totally unproductive day!!! The only thing that I did was finish editing up photos for last weekends photo shoot and did send off a few photos to be printed. I think that it is time to get some frames and mats and start getting my photos organized up again.

Going to be starting a couple of new sections on my blog in the next couple of weeks, after my class ends.

Photo/Peoms, My Reviews and Art Works. Won't explain what these are because I want them to be a surprise :) You will notice now that I have started a "Quote" Post once a week as well, the quotes wil...l include a link to the author if there was one.

Photo/Peoms; I have wanted for awhile now to find a peom that fits with a photo that I had taken. Or a Photo that fits with a peom that I like. I think it could be interesting and who knows what might become of it. Not sure if this will be a once a week thing or a once every 2 weeks, so we shall see.

My Reviews; Now I dont really have a definition of this section yet. But I was thinking to Review some of the photography books, websites, and other things that interest me, etc. He has some really great stuff and has gather some really great people around him to teach. This section might not start until next month once I get my thoughts organized for this series of blogs.

Art Works: I have wanted to take some Art History courses in the coming year, so I have thought that maybe I would start trying to study up on some of the different pieces that are out there. I decided that I would focus first on some of the
"Group of Seven" piece, Canadian Artists.

365 Photo Project - Photo 5

I came across this guy playing at the C-train and decided that he was going to be my P365. I did a little with the photo as I always do. I would have like to have taken a few more shots of him but I think he was a little uncomfortable with me taking his photo so I only took a couple of shots.

Checkout some of the photos being created using an Iphone app that was created by Chase Jarvis. He says that "The best camera you have is the one you have with you". Sounds good to me and I have started taking a camera with me just about everywhere I go now because you never know what you might find. Last week I bought it along and created a couple of interesting photos, may not have been the greatest conditions but still I was doing what I love to do.

Pink Roses

365 Photo Project - Photo 5 a & b

Earlier this week, was my Mom's birthday and Dad got her some mixed flowers with some pink roses included. She took them yesterday to dry and told me want a couple of photos done of them. So the artist me came out and decided that I was going to play a little and I really like the results.

I high keyed the photo both will shooting and then again photoshop. I also softened and hardened the flowers, if that makes any sense.

Black & White Fridays - Feb 5

Black and White Fridays are definitely been a bit of a challenge because that goal is to create a new black/white image each week. Well, this week was no different, it took a few days to come up with an idea for these couple of photos that I am going to share with you.

I have wanted to do something like this for quite a while but wasn't sure how I was going to create and develop the idea. So, yesterday, I decided that I was just going to go and give it a shot just to see what I might come up with. Will I was very happy with the results, now I did do some playing in photoshop just to see what I might create.

All of these images were taken at Union Cemetery here in Calgary, in the military section of the cemetery. I was quite surprised at finding the Canadian flags place on the graves in the snow. So I did do a little manipulating to bring out the red of the flag.

Flags in the Snow

This section I do believe was of the soldiers from the First World War.

This one I do believe is my favourite photo of the whole shoot that day.

The sun was rather harsh but I think it helped to create some real drama in the photo. I am starting to really fall in love with High Key images/photos once I started to understand how to create such photos.

Yesterday, was an extremely great shooting day. I wish all my days were like that one but I can't complain because those days are starting to become more and more.

Curve Creation Thursdays - Feb 4

Well, it is Thursday again and time for a new Curve Creations. I really like to create this photos and then the manipulation that goes with them. When I am going shooting, I can usually picture what the Curve Creation before hand but not always with that photo is going to be ... It usually presents itself. If that makes any sense, hahah :)

Today's Creation is of Old City Hall ... I think the old buildings make very interesting images.

Curve Creations - Old City Hall

Trees, Trees and More Trees

365 Photo Project - Photo 4

Well, Todays P365 Photo ended up being trees, trees and more trees. Everything was frost covered again but there was beautiful deep blue skies to make the trees all stand out. Now downtown Calgary, there is a great row of trees just in front of city hall and they were just in the glory today between the frost covered branches and the blue sky ... What more could you ask for.

Winter Walkway

Today's adventure took me also to Union Cemetery, one of the oldest cemetery still in use here in Calgary. I have been up there many times, and truly enjoy wandering through the different areas and see what might grab my attentions or my creative eye.

Here are a few samples of what I did find at Union Cemetery:

P365 for Tuesday & Wednesday

Well, Monday and Tuesdays for me are very much like 1 very long day. Its starts at 1:30pm on Monday and I work until 10 and then back in Tuesday morning by 8am. And off to class and I don't have enough time to head home first, so I don't usually get home until 10pm. So there isn't much time to blog on Tuesdays or do any posting at all. But hey, that is the name of the game, isn't.

So, Tuesday, I took along my camera in hopes that I would have a little time to shot before class. SAIT campus was under construction much of last year but the one particular building, the new park area is complete ... And they have this really weird structure coming out of the ground that is the walkway from the parking lot.

365 Photo Project - Photo 1
The Parking walkway at SAIT

I have played a little with this photo, I do plan on taking more photos of this structure again.

Overnight the fog rolled in again and I couldn't resist taking more photos of the gorgeous frost covered trees. I really like this one tree, it is just down the block and it is one of those trees that has true character whether it is the dead of winter or a beautiful spring day.

365 Photo Project - Photo 3

This tree is one of those trees, that does have color in the winter time. It holds its berries and many of its leaves all winter long, if the birdies haven't gotten to them. So there is some color in the northern landscape, you just have to look for it.

Photoshop Mondays ~ Feb 1

Well, not sure what all I can say today. I have a couple of suggestions though that I think will be a great help to some.

First, Curves Curves Curves!!

Figure this function out ... I am still learning but go in and do some playing. There are alot of different things that you can do in Curves and you can really enhance a photo or you can really destroy a photo. So when you decided to start playing make sure you are not working on your original photo so that if you do mess something up you don't destroy your original.

I was introduce to the concept of Curves in a Seminar that was instructed by Ben Willmore. This man has a great understanding of Curves and I bet would be awesome to have a one on one class to learn from him directly.

Do some research on Curves, Ben has written a Photoshop Book, couple actually where he does talk about and go through some Curves.

P365 and a New Month

Well, it is the beginning of February already and a new month for 365 Photo Projects but I must finish January first. I did do a photo for January 31 but hadnt had the time to post until this morning.

Went out and did a little night photography of Downtown Calgary ... It was very grey looking but I fixed some of that is it does look better. And played with the photo some to give it a little punch!!

February 1st , P365 photo is one of my class assignments which is "Corporate Logos". So one of the last ones I did was of a Bailey's bottle .... Love this stuff, great with Timmies, by the way!!!
