Great Shooting Over the Last Few Days

I have been out shooting some over the last few days ...

Friday, I spent with James with Learning Photography Alberta at the Calgary Zoo and what a great day!!!  I learned a couple of new things one being spot metering.  Ok Ok, I know I have been at this photography thing for a while and I have just figure out spot metering!!   Well, yeah ... but hey how cool is that, that I am still learning and bettering myself!!

I love the effect that spot metering creates and I am so thrilled that James show the group how to do this.  And I have been working on it all weekend long.

Also figured out how to do manual focus a little better as well.  This trick well work on non-moving subjects but I am quite happy with it.  You need live view on your camera, and use your zoom figure to enlarge the subject in live view and then focus.  I know this doesn't quite make great sense but I have always had a hard time focusing and this makes a big difference.

Saturday, I took only a few shots but I rather like them.  Decided to go for a bit of a drive and found a pond ... not much for wildlife but did find some great weeds!!

But there was a duck!!  Who swam across the pond just before I left and got a couple of photos from him ... but she was a ways away.

This is a female mallard and the photo was taken not far from Indus, Alberta.

Today, was a fun day as well.  Went with a few thoughts for photos ... not sure if I really captured what I wanted but it was fun trying!!

Just Hanging About!!

This little guy just "Hung Out"!!  I even was able to change lens while all he did was change flowers.  Now not sure exactly what he was doing because it didn't look like he was feeding.  I personally think he was showing how pretty he was but well who knows, hahah

There are tonnes of dragonflies this year, big and little and everything in between.  The guy was quite big, little flying helicopter.

He really love the flowers I think, he hung around for at least 15 minutes buzzing around and just hanging there.  I do hope he or his friends come back again so that I can take a few more photos from them.

Waterfall Effect!!

Ok, so I am really liking my new filter.  I did a little more experimenting yet today, this time with water!!  I am quite pleased.  Still learning but its coming and really like what I have created.

Went for a drive out to Big Springs Provincial Park today, and what a beautiful day to go.  Not to hot and not to windy, it was great.  Had the grand tour of Airdie first but we made it.

The yellow granola fields are pretty right now and with the Bright Blue Alberta Skies, made for some great photos.

Just a little video I put together with some of the imagines I took over the last day or so.

Unsure if this is going to work but I hope so. :)

Experimenting with a New ND Filter

I picked up a new neutral density filter for my camera.  Have wanted to play with something like this for ages and just decided to do it.  I look forward to see what I can create along the way.

This is a 1second exposure at F22 on a tripod ... the trunk of the tree is still a little blurry but I think that it is partly from the wind as well as I should have been using a trigger release, which I havent been about to find ... I know I have one but!!!

This image is a 10second exposure at F22 also on a tripod.  I zoomed the lens in and out to get more of a blur.  I took quite a few photos but was more of an experiment to see what I could come up with.  I look forward to trying this out on a waterfall etc to see what I will come up with.

Travel Photography ~ Learning Photography Alberta

I found this company through Facebook ... I had been looking forward something new as well as something that was being offered here in Calgary.  I seem to always find neat courses but they are always somewhere far away.  I also wanted something that was like the photo tours I have taken in London and Edinburgh.  I truly enjoy learning from James, very knowledgeable and liked the way he explained the techniques and then sent the group off to practice and then to show off them favorite shots.

I love the creative aspect of photography, if you know how to manipulate your camera and can do anything. There was lots of opportunities downtown on Thursday to be creative and it was a very good day for the course.

We did have some unexpected company which bought smiles to everyone in the group :) These guys are great and so brave because it has been ssssoooo hot during this years Stampede.

Having fun with Tilt!  I have always loved tilting my photos just to see what I can create, but have also learning when not to tilt.  But this guy I thought looked pretty good tilted, he was right across from the Irish Pub so well, never know right?? :)

Well, wont post all this photos here but please check out my Travel Photography Alberta.  I will be take 2 other courses with Learning Photography Alberta this month and will be sharing my thoughts and images with you.

Day Out with a Good Friend

Last week, I went shooting with a good friend of mine, who I haven't seen since last fall.  And we had a great time, it was short but still enjoyed every minute. Did a little bit of photography, tonnes of chatting and had a good menu, which I owed her from last around out.  Me and my bank card wont on talking terms, considering I left it on my desk!!!

We decided to wander through Stephen Avenue Mall, and discovered that alot of Stampede stuff was starting to kick off.  Mostly set up and sometimes you can really find some neat stuff that way.

We both have a thing for the new Bow Building in Calgary.  Every time I go down town I always have to take a few photos of it.  Still trying to find an interesting location to get some interesting shots.

I think once the plaza park of this building opens there will be some great spots of photos.

We started off photographing the Horses!!  Interesting sculptures called Wild Horses:  This stampede of wild horses can be found charging their way to the west in downtown. Going to head back there and see what else I can create and to find the little details in these sculptures.

Here is another building I love to shoot, just for the reflections along!!!  So all in all, we had a pretty good day.  The fish "n" chips & Guinness I had that day was great and it was a beautiful day to sit out on the patio to people watch and do a little catching up.

I look forward to our next day out, Cristal, it mustn't be so far apart next time.

Rope Square - Calgary Stampede

I made it down to Rope Square aka Olympic Plaza this morning ... To watch and photograph the goings on. One of my favorite things to photograph is the Native Dancers, with all they beautiful costumes and great dances.  I love the idea that all of the dances have meanings behind them, what a way to preserve story and heritage.

This little guy stole the show!!  Right out in front and was just a dancing.  He was awesome!!

Come and Check out the other Photos I took at Rope Square this morning.  Will be adding more over the next few days, I took over 900 images so it will take a while to get them out uploaded.

A great 2 nights of fireworks ... I however, didn't realize that they going to have fireworks all over the city this year.  So I missed the first night, well not missed but woke me out of a dead sleep ... I do believe the sheets got a little wet!! LoL :)

So the second night I was all set up to photograph the fireworks, and did get a few good shots out of the deal.

Light Up the City - Calgary Stampede is quite a big deal.  It is really nice to be able to see some of the fireworks from my own home and not have to go out anywhere to view them.

I look forward to heading down to the grounds not only to shoot but also be part of the Stampede Centennial.

It's Stampede Time again ... 100 years Huh!!!

The Calgary Stampede has hit a Milestone this year of 100 years Old.  That is a big thing in this part of the world, not many things have lasted that long.

I have many plans for this coming week, shooting at Rope Square, photographing a Breakfast and check out the fireworks on the last night.  I look forward to sharing my images with you over the next week or so.  My first little adventure was checking out some of the activity on Stephen Avenue Mall, on Thursday to see what kind of Stampeding was going on.  Not much that day, but the setting up was well under way.

Will be adding as I go, so come on over and check things out!!
