Nikka Yuko Japanese Gardens ~ Lethbridge

Beautiful place to visit and to take a walk through, so a great place for some awesome photos.

PAGODA ~ The five tiers of the pagoda represent earth, water, fire, wind and sky. Water is the heart of a garden and connotes purity in Japanese culture. Stones at the base of the bridges give a strength and endurance. A stone with lichens in its natural state has an ancient, spiritual quality. Rocks sit in the ground, not on the ground, giving the appearance that they have been there from time immemorial. Plants were chosen, and are cared for, to grace the rocks and artifacts with subtle color and texture.

Check out more about the gardens: www.nikkayuko.com

PAVILION ~ Remove and carry your shoes as you step into this pavilion constructed of yellow aromatic cypress and cedar using 17th Century architecture and no nails. Open the shoji (sliding doors) on your right to view the dry garden.

Spent about 1.5hr wandering through the garden and taking several photos, which I will post once I get home. There were some great views of Henderson Lake at this location as well.

Lethbridge Bound!!!

Made it to Lethbridge without any problems and without to many u-turns! We stopped in Okotoks for supper and the sun was going down. Because they are forecasting rain tomorrow many of the farmers are out combining. Well, we jumped out of car the car and started shooting!!

You can see it here, but there are several deer in this field, I do believe there are both male and female. It was really rather cool.

A Challenge for Today!?

Earlier today a friend of mine challenged me to get out with my camera and do a little shooting. So I was already heading to shoot but when there is a bit of a challenge in front of me, makes a world of difference ... makes me look and see things and find things that sometimes you don't always look for.

There was tonnes of activity going on in Downtown Calgary today, one being "Walk a Mile, In her Shoes!!"  Which is a Hoot!!  Only saw a few walkers out but I may have missed the others on my little detours along Stephen Avenue this morning.

Now the idea is to walk a mile in a pair of heels!!  But this guys have some pretty nice dressings so well!!

I am in the middle of setting up a photowalk, so I have been trying to get a route figured out and today I walked part of it and added a bit to it.  I really enjoy shooting along Stephen Ave Mall, there are some great old buildings along with new buildings and there is always some sort of activities going on along the way.

Such a poser!!  She spotted me with my camera and posed beautifully for me!! Thank you!!

There is also some great shops along the way as well with some awesome displays out as well.  This is Twigs ... love this shop always have some neat stuff and really colorful too.

Not sure what was up with all the place settings but sure made for a great photo op :)  This is one of the reasons why I really love to head downtown, never know what you might find :)

And well, one of my favorite buildings to shoot is the Bow Building!!  After out shooting Monday with a friend, I had to go back with my wide angle and see what I could come up with.  I can wait until all of the construction is gone so I can really see what I can get.

And one last one ... Never forget to look down, you never know what you might find!! hahah

HDR from NSI 2012

Still working on figuring out how HDR works.  High Dynamic Range or HDR is a set of methods used in imaging and photography, to allow a greater dynamic range between the lightest and darkest areas of an image than current standard digital imaging methods or photographic methods. HDR images can represent more accurately the range of intensity levels found in real scenes, from direct sunlight to faint starlight, and is often captured by way of a plurality of differently exposed pictures of the same subject matter.

This was taken while out shooting during my class at NSI this past August along BeaverDam Road in St. Catherines, Ontario.  It was an early morning shoot also got some great sunrise images as well.

Below are the 4 images I used to create the above HDR image.

As you can see there are several different levels of exposure in this image.  I am currently using Merge to HDR in Photoshop and then tweaking the image a bit until I get what I like and want.

Helping Out!!

I spent 2 evening this week helping out James with Learning Photography Alberta/Canada teaching some great people how to use their cameras.  I couldn't resist a few shots myself!!  We had beautiful light both evenings and a great sunset the second night.

Many of the students had great fun learning to shot at dusk and got some really great images.  There are some great lights around Olympic plaza that I didn't know about and if I am brave enough maybe I will go down again sometime in the near future, before winter sets in and all you do is hide inside!!

I think I have found a couple new spots to shoot at and looking forward to going back and seeing what I can find.  The leaves are all starting to change here in Calgary and there some very pretty places to shoot.

Let's Check Out this Road!!

On the way to Grande Prairie, we did some of stopping and check out some of the side roads and provincials parks along the way.  Mostly we were looking for a good spot for picnic lunch and I was looking for good things to take photos of.

On one of these little side trips, we found a cemetery in among the birch trees and it was a very pretty and quiet spot.  The birch trees are what really got me!!

Also found one of those old steel cross bridges, usually only enough room for one vehicle.

And No, I didn't lay in the middle of the road but my camera did!!  Actually very very quiet road there was one one around.

I did a little playing as well just to see what I could create.  I rather like this technique, I think it makes some rather dull objects like a little more interesting.

See if you can guess what this is??  If you can't I will post what it is in tomorrow's blog.

Starlite Diner Car!!

Something new can be found at Bowden, Alberta and rather neat too!!  There is a neat old style diner just past the rest area, made pretty good coffee and a great egg sandwich breakfast.  I hope they make it through the winter months because I look forward to stopping there again next year.

I couldn't have had better blue skies for the photos above, and great light to take a couple of photos inside as well.  Check it out there next time you go through Bowden, the staff there was great.

Jasper and on the Way Home!!

Well, it is very much autumn here in the mountains, the air is chilly and many of the leaves are starting to change. Today was the first day it was chilly out, but not in all of the places we visited today. We spent a little time in Jasper, so needed a little bit of time in a couple of the stores!! Then head towards the Columbia Icefields, didn't go up but drove by them, I hadn't seen them before so it was interesting to see. The lower part is considered Athabasca Glacier.

The Athabasca Glacier is one of the six principal 'toes' of the Columbia Icefield, located in the Canadian Rockies. The glacier currently recedes at a rate of 2–3 metres (6.6–9.8 ft) per year[1] and has receded more than 1.5 km (0.93 mi) in the past 125 years and lost over half of its volume. The glacier moves down from the icefield at a rate of several centimetres per day. Due to its close proximity to the Icefields Parkway, between the Alberta towns of Banff and Jasper, and rather easy accessibility, it is the most visited glacier in North America. The leading edge of the glacier is within easy walking distance; however, travel onto the glacier is not recommended unless properly equipped. Hidden crevasses have led to the deaths of unprepared tourist.

Well, heading home tomorrow, sad to be doing so but happy to be able to sleep in my own bed. Promise to get caught on blogs and photos soon.

Twin Peaks

There is forest of course all around, so I went for a short walk down one of the paths and the sun was shining so nicely through the trees that I took a few photos along the way. I can't to get this one home and see what it really looks like on a big screen or even printed.

On the Way to Prince George

Well, got the flat tire all fixed and was on the road again by 9am Tuesday Morning!! Found a great water fall called Bijoux Falls. What an excellent spot for a picnic!! There was a whole bunch of Steller Jays, what a hoot!!! We were feeding them bread and well we must of had about 10 of they hanging around waiting their turn to get a piece!!

These guys are actually rather pretty looking don't you think? Also rather curious and very brave as well. They hop right up and took bread off the picnic bench while all 4 of us were sitting there.

BC Travels ~ 2012 ~ Dawson Creek

Well, made it to Dawson Creek, BC from Grande Prairie AB but it was an unschedule stop due to a flat!!! And due to it being a holiday, you can't get it fix until Tuesday morning, oh well, such is life.

Dawson Creek is a neat little/big town with a great little historical downtown. The old hotel on the outside has had a face lift and there are some really neat murals painting down the alley way.

And how lucky could I be with the old Royals Royce c.1950-60s. I took several images, and looking forward to working on them when I get home.

This is the alley way and at the end there is a mural of Ford repair shop and a mural cars on a road.

While waiting for AMA to come and change the tire, had sometime to play and see what I could create. Just sharing a few images while I am away but when I get home I will share the rest.

Tomorrow, hopefully, we will be on to Prince George ... looking forward to seeing PG, I have been that far north before.

Travels to BC!! ~ 2012 ~ September 1

Out for the last week of holidays and can't to get to BC, its been just to long. Did stop a few spots along the way to take a few photos and trying to be a little bit creative.

I was a little creative today, and used my ND filter to make the water a little flowy looking and the rock was just screaming take a picture of me PLLLEASEEE!!

The weeds above really applied to me, wish I would have had a bit more time to snoop through the weeds and other wild flowers along the way.

I am posting from my Ipad, and its been a while since I have done so. Not is as easy, as I wish it could be!!
