Its Birdie day!! ~ August 31st

Today was rainy and I had no motivation to do anything but the birdies were happy so I had to take a few photos.

The little gold finches were having a riot at the feeders, busy being picky about which seeds they were going to eat!!

The little mourning doves are so hard to get any photos of but was happy this little guy hung out just long enough.

Out & About!! ~ August 30th

August 30th

The squirrel was out helping himself to some birdies!!!  I was able to get quite close before he decided I was to close!!

Decided to go into Moose Jaw for supper and made the driver stop at several spots along the way.  But was very happy with all the shots I did get!!  Even though I was shooting into the sun!! haha

Awesome Finds, Today!! ~ August 29th

August 29th

We went out again today, and firstly played with my flashes.  But boy was it hot so we didn't last to long out.

Great old truck that another cousin is trying to sell so I thought it need its picture taken too.

Then we did try for the sun set this evening but there was a big bank of clouds so we ended not getting the great sunset but we found something even better … ITS A TRAIN!!!!

Fall has Began!! ~ August 28th

August 28th

Cousin and Fellow Photographer, Megan and I went out and did a little shooting.  The fall colours here have already start and we capture some interesting images.  As you will see, the skies were dark so we didn't get a chance to shoot for very long but we still had fun!!

Earlier in the day, I decided to see what I could find and well this little outhouse doesn't get used much any more but it was screaming to have its picture taken!!

Sunset Over Tuxford ~ August 27th

Excellent Day for Shooting!!

Went down to the lake around 7am, missed the sun rise but did get some beautiful photos.  Then spent some of the day chancing the birds and taking photos of them.  They don't sit still very well but still had fun doing it!! :)

Went this evening and took some great sun set photos!!!   Tuxford is just a little ways down the road and caught the sun going doing between the elevators!!!  One of those ever so perfect prairie evening sunsets!!!

Buffalo Pound Lake ~ August 26th

Made it to Buffalo Pound Lake and the cabin for a week.  Spent a little time playing around with my flash just to see what I can do.  Love It Love It Love It!!!  Use it to throw in just a wee bit more light into some of the darks areas I was shooting in and was quite happy with what I got.

Looking forward to doing more photography this week and practising what I have learned.  And sharing what I can but my internet access is very very limited.

Just One for Tonight!! ~ August 25th

Made it to Moose Jaw!!  Yeah I know how exciting but it is a beautiful prairie town that will always be special to me.

There is a great old sign out on the highway that I decided was going to my photo for today.

I did however feed every mosquito from miles around so this was a very very short shoot!!

Off Again!! Saskatchewan Bound!! ~ August 24th

Left this morning for the second half of my holidays to Saskatchewan.  Yeah I know why right, but hey there are worse places to have a holiday.

Along the way, stopped at Dinosaur Provincial Park ... neat looking place. I hope to revisit it some time again in the near future.

"The park is in the valley of the Red Deer River, which is noted for its badland topography. The park is one of the richest dinosaurfossil locales in the world. Forty dinosaur species have been discovered at the park and more than 500 specimens have been removed and exhibited in museums across the globe. The fossil assemblage of nearly 500 species, from microscopic fern spores to large carnivorous dinosaurs, justified it becoming a World Heritage Site in 1979."

There must of been a touch of frost in the valley already or possibly extremely dry because the trees were already starting to chance color here.

The combines are already out to because many of the fields had be hay bales out.

All the fields were deep golden color to them and so pretty to look at.

There was a great old abandon store that I attempted to do a little HDR with.

Still need to work a bit on my HDR, but not to bad.

Pulled into a nice little motel in Swift Current and there was the great red bike sitting here screaming to have its photo taken!!

And have no complaints about the sunset, it was beautiful!!

After the Rain ~ August 23rd

A very quick thunder storm raced through Calgary today.  Now the skies are blue and the air is clean and the flowers are all very happy.

Day 5 ~ Last Day @ NSI, So Sad!! ~ August 22nd

It was a wonderful week of new friends, old friend, massive amounts of learning and basically a really good week of holidays for me.

We all worked very hard, and played hard all week and took away so great  new techniques that I can't wait to work on and perfect to the best of my ability.

I came away with some great information and I would totally recommend Michael Willems to anyone.

They wouldn't give the poor man a desk, made him set up in the hall!! :)

Thank you Michael, You were Awesome!!!!  :)

Day 4 ~ How did I do that? ~ August 21st

So yeah, how did I do this?  It was about 11am in the morning and in full sun!!  Very Much like the image below.

Well, first of all, I am using a flash, Canon 580ex on a Canon 7D, however, it really doesn't matter.  Took a couple of tries to get the right setting to get my background dark.  Your ISO should be set to 100, F-stop is at 8 and here is the kicker, the Shutter Speed needs to be 2000.  Now I can hear it from here, flashes can't be use with a shutter speed of 2000, but yes it can if you put the flash on High Speed Sync, then you can do what ever you want!!!

NSI Day 3 ~ What a Little Light Can Do!! ~ August 20th

What can a little light do?

Working with a combination of speedlights (flashes) and studio strobe lights.  One big strobe as the main source of light and then 2 flashes, one as a hair light and the other for a side filler light.

Non-Edited With Out Lighting

So, Yep, this image is dark, dull, icky etc etc.  And Yeah, I can edit and I can get not to bad of a image.

Yes, I brighten but it is still rather dull.

And now; Looky, what a little light can do!!

Day Two ~ Zooming a Flash ~ August 19th

So get this .. Did you know you can zoom a flash .. yeah me either!!

 Zoom in the flash.
  • Zooming the flash .. if the numbers are small, the beam is bigger and if the numbers are bigger, the beam is smaller.
All these images were taken with the following settings:
  • Shutter Speed: 320s
  • F-stop: 8.0
  • ISO: 400
Set the flash zoom to 24mm

Set the flash zoom to 28mm

Set the flash zoom to 35mm

Set the flash zoom to 50mm

Set the flash zoom to 70mm

Set the flash zoom to 80mm

Set the flash zoom to 105mm

Notice how the beam of light is becoming more and more concentrated, becoming a spot light.  Cool huh!!
