Burchette Camp ~ Kimberley, BC

This pleasant rest area, and the creek flowing through it, have been named after Walter Burchette, one of the four prospectors who discovered the Sullivan Mine. The other miners were Pat Sullivan, John Cleaver and Ed Smith.

Burchette was the first to discover ore at the site in his float, just a little farther up the Mark Creek valley. The team then found the source, staked two claims, “Hamlet” and “Shylock”, and recorded it. The discovery was to become the famous Sullivan Mine. The party of four worked their claims from 1892-1896, then sold to the Le Roi people for $24,000, “mighty big money in those days.”

You can learn more about the Sullivan Mine with a visit to the Orpheum Theatre, a train ride through the Mark Creek Valley and a tour of the Power House.

S.S Moyie at Kaslo, BC

This elegant sternwheeler is the oldest intact passenger steam vessel of its type in the world. The machinery and the steel frames of its hull were built by the Bertram Engine Works of Toronto, shipped west by rail and assembled in Vancouver. Launched at Nelson on 22 October 1898 by the Canadian Pacific Railway, the S.S. Moyie carried passengers and freight on Rescued and preserved by the people of Kaslo, the “sweetheart of the lake” recalled the role of sternwheelers in the history of western Canada.

Setting Moon

Ok, this of course was yesterday .. Calgary woke to rain this morning.  It was a beautiful morning and day Monday and just had to get up and get a few shot of the moon before it disappeared again for a while.

Abstract Images

I have been working on this idea for awhile ... different images ... just playing to see what I can come up with.  Some of them work and some of them don't but hey that is the way of anything.

I love to shooting wet rocks ... they intrigue me for some reason ... I think mainly because of them really rich colors that stand out so well.

Pilot Bay Lighthouse

Light of the Lake A Maritime Guide

Pilot Bay Lighthouse was established by the Government of Canada as an important aid to marine navigation. Put into operation on January 1, 1905, the building' light was visible on more than two-thirds of 65 mile long Kootenay Lake.

Originally an oil lamp guided the paddlewheel steamers and other maritime traffic to make the critical turn into the West Arm of the lake near Balfour. Over the next 88 years technology helped modernize the light source several times. In 1989 solar panels were installed to power the beacon's characteristic signal – one second of light followed by eleven seconds of dark.

The federal government decommissioned Pilot Bay Lighthouse in 1993 at which time regional groups and individuals worked together to have the building saved for its heritage and tourism values. Today this unique building is surrounded by Pilot Bay Provincial Marine Park and is maintained through a co-operative agreement between BC Parks and the volunteers of the Friends of West Kootenay Parks.

In Honour of Terry Fox!!

Today, was the Terry Fox Run across Canada to raise funds for cancer research for a cure.  This run has been going on since I was a kid and I was quite honoured to be able to see the Memorial for Terry Fox in St. John's, this past June.

"I just wish people would realize the anything is possible if you try, dreams are made if people try."

Terry Fox (1958-1981)
While in remission from cancer, Terry Fox set out to run across Canada to raise money for cancer research.  Despite having lost his right leg to the disease, this determined athlete ran 5,373 kilometres - nearly a "Marathon of Hope," which began in St. John's on April 12, 1980, captivated Canadians with its bold humanitarianism, transformed our vocabulary about personal courage, and revolutionized fund-raising.  To date, hundreds of millions of dollars have been raised by Fox and in his name to the benefit of cancer sufferers around the world.  The heroic nature, and tragic interruption of his made Terry Fox an enduring Canadian icon.
