Beautiful Craigdarroch Castle

This Castle really was a great photography opportunity and I took as many photos of it as I could. Also spent about 2hours inside exploring as well just before heading home.  The last morning I was there was the best morning to be out shooting the castle ... beautiful soft blue skies, what more could you ask for!!

Craigdarroch was designed by Oregon architects Warren H. Williams and Arthur L. Smith and completed in 1890. It was built for Robert and Joan Dunsmuir, early Scottish colonists but Robert died before the house was finished and Joan moved in with three daughters and two orphaned grandchildren in the fall of 1890.

The story of the Dunsmuir family and their rise from humble beginnings to pinnacle of wealth and power in western Canada is complex and fascinating.

A year after Joan Dunsmuir's death in 1908, Craigdarroch was sold and the contents auctioned. Since then it has housed a number of institution including: Craigdarroch Military Hospital (1919-21); Victoria College (1921-1946); Victoria School Board (1946-68); Victoria Conservatory of Music (1969-79); Craigdarroch Castle Historical Museum Society (1969 to present).
