Mary, Queen of the World Cathedral

LA BASILIQUE-CATHEDRALE MARIE-REINE-DU-MONDE
MARIE-REINIE-DU-MONDE BASILICA-CATHEDRAL

This cathedral is a testament to the ultramontanism espoused by Ignace Bourget, second bishop of Montreal. Eager to express his deep commitment to the papacy, he decided that his cathedral would be based on the model of St. Peter’s in Rome. Built between 1870 and 1894, according to plans by the architect Victor Bourgeon and Rev. Joseph Michaud, it reflects its famous model with its facade, dome and interior decoration. In this then-Protestant area, it proudly asserted the presence of the Catholic Church.
